Origins
MAC Cosmetics was born backstage. In 1984, Frank Toskan — a makeup artist and photographer — and Frank Angelo — a salon owner — were frustrated that existing makeup didn't photograph well under studio lighting. Working from Angelo's kitchen in Toronto, they began mixing their own formulas, creating products that looked flawless on camera. They sold their first products directly to models, photographers, and makeup artists from a single counter in a Toronto department store. Word spread through the fashion industry like wildfire — MAC's products were genuinely different, and the pros knew it.
Growth & Global Expansion
MAC's reputation spread from backstage to mainstream, and Estée Lauder acquired the brand in 1998.
