Origins
Sephora's story begins with a revolutionary idea about how beauty products should be sold. In 1969, French entrepreneur Dominique Mandonnaud opened a perfume shop in Limoges, France with a radical concept: instead of keeping products behind glass counters where only salespeople could touch them, he put everything on open shelves where customers could freely test and explore. This 'open-sell' concept was unheard of in the beauty industry and transformed the shopping experience. He named his store after the Greek word 'Sepphora' (meaning beautiful in Hebrew) and the biblical Zipporah.
Growth & Global Expansion
Sephora was acquired by LVMH — the world's largest luxury goods conglomerate — in 1997, which supercharged its global expansion. The brand entered the United States in 1998 and quickly became the dominant beauty retailer, revolutionizing the industry with its curated multi-brand approach and Beauty Insider loyalty program. Today, Sephora operates over 2,700 stores in 35 countries and is the world's leading beauty specialty retailer, known for carrying over 340 brands and 45,000 products.

Sephora entered the UAE in 2007 and has since become the undisputed beauty destination for UAE shoppers.
