The Brand Story
Origins
Sony was born from the ruins of post-war Tokyo. In May 1946, Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita — a physicist and a businessman — founded Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering) in a bombed-out department store with just $530 and 20 employees. Their first product was a rice cooker that didn't work properly. But Ibuka's engineering brilliance and Morita's marketing genius proved to be an unstoppable combination. They created Japan's first tape recorder in 1950 and the country's first transistor radio in 1955. The name 'Sony' came from combining 'sonus' (Latin for sound) with 'sonny' (a term for bright young people).
Growth & Global Expansion
Sony's Walkman, launched in 1979, created the concept of portable personal music and sold over 400 million units. The PlayStation, launched in 1994, revolutionized gaming and has sold over 600 million consoles across all generations. Sony Pictures produces some of Hollywood's biggest franchises (Spider-Man, James Bond). Sony Music is home to artists from Beyoncé to AC/DC. Today, Sony generates over $80 billion in annual revenue across electronics, gaming, music, film, and financial services — making it one of the most diversified entertainment companies on Earth.
Presence in UAE & GCC
Sony has a strong retail presence across the UAE with dedicated stores in major malls and a network of authorized retailers.
